How Data Governance Impacts Microsoft Fabric Implementations

In the era of rapid AI adoption and real-time analytics, Microsoft Fabric is becoming a central hub for consolidating data across the business. At the same time, the speed and simplicity with which users can ingest, transform, and share data inside Fabric can quickly lead to uncontrolled growth. 2. Impact on Architecture

OneLake centralizes structured and unstructured data in a single logical storage layer and supports virtualized access to external data through Shortcuts. This reduces duplication but introduces a governance question: how do you govern data that physically lives outside your environment, such as in AWS S3 or Google Cloud Storage?

Governance policies must determine:

  • Who can create Shortcuts? (To prevent unauthorized external data ingestion).

3. Security and Access Control

Role-based access control in Entra ID and Fabric must be designed to reflect how the organization actually works.
