How SPS Corporation Migrated to Microsoft Fabric Without Starting Over

Written by Timextender | September 3, 2026

SPS Corporation, headquartered in Melbourne, is a diverse Australian empire of businesses across a range of industries such as property, recreational vehicles and art and picture framing. Timextender has worked closely with SPS Corporation for many years, particularly in its art and picture framing businesses (Antons Mouldings and Bellini Fine Moulding) but also in its recreational vehicle business (NCE).

Antons Mouldings is an industry leader in the wholesale supply of components and finished product to the Australian and New Zealand picture framing industry. Now in its fifth decade of operation, the Antons brand and company is synonymous with the industry it services.

Bellini Fine Moulding is a wholesale distributor of exclusive hand-finished European picture frame moulding to Galleries, high-end Picture Framers, Interior Designers and Architects. The Bellini range offers a unique point of difference for framers and a persuasive alternative to mass produced product. Featuring a range of skilfully crafted moulding, all hand finished in Italy, Bellini offers a dynamic collection of picture frame moulding.

NCE has been a leading supplier of components to the recreational vehicle (RV) industry for more than 25 years. From the full suite of timber products including plywood, panelling, trims, mouldings, structural timbers, flooring and RV furniture, to the very best in RV specific components including televisions, audio visual, whitegoods, air conditioners, cookware, bedding, RV windows, doors and fibreglass wall panelling systems.

The Business Challenge

As a long-term Microsoft customer, SPS Corporation used AX 2012 for many years with an on-premises SQL data warehouse created by Timextender. When SPS Corporation migrated to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, they adopted Microsoft's then-recommended data extraction process of "bring your own database" (BYOD).

However, massive data volumes rendered the BYOD approach non-performant over time. SPS Corporation needed a modern, scalable data platform that could handle their growing data needs across multiple business units without sacrificing performance or requiring a complete reimplementation of their analytics solution.

Why Timextender?

Thanks to Timextender's Unified Metadata Framework, the initial migration from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations was an easy lift-and-shift operation. Data from both systems was seamlessly integrated in the data warehouse, enabling long-term trend analysis without any disruption to business users.

"It took literally no time to migrate our data warehouse and reporting solution from AX 2012 to D365FO and best of all, data from AX 2012 and D365FO was seamlessly integrated by Timextender in the data warehouse ... our business users couldn't see where AX 2012 data ended and D365FO data began when doing long-term trend analysis." – Chris Hutchinson, Senior D365FO Analyst

When Microsoft released Azure Synapse Link for Dataverse, landing data in Delta tables in OneLake and Fabric Lakehouse, Timextender's architecture made the transition straightforward. Because Timextender supports Fabric Lakehouse and has always been designed in accordance with what Microsoft calls the "Medallion Architecture", SPS Corporation could move to Fabric Lakehouse and Power BI Premium through a solution adaptation rather than a full reimplementation, with Timextender generating Python notebooks instead of SQL stored procedures.

"It was a quite cost-effective migration to move from a legacy platform like SQL Server on-premises to a futureproof platform like Microsoft Fabric." – Gavin McInerney, CFO

SPS Corporation's data journey mirrors a pattern seen across the Microsoft ecosystem: organisations that built on AX 2012 and migrated to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations initially relied on BYOD for data extraction. As data volumes grew, Microsoft's own platform evolved, first through Azure Synapse Link for Dataverse and then through the broader Microsoft Fabric vision with OneLake and Lakehouse.

Timextender's metadata-driven approach and alignment with the Medallion Architecture means that as Microsoft's data platform evolves, customers like SPS Corporation can adapt their data solutions without starting from scratch. Each platform shift becomes a configuration change within Timextender rather than a full reimplementation, protecting the investment in business logic and reporting that has been built up over years.

Outcomes

Through its long-standing partnership with Timextender, SPS Corporation has achieved:

  • Seamless ERP migration – Data from AX 2012 and D365FO was seamlessly integrated, enabling uninterrupted long-term trend analysis across business units.

  • Cost-effective platform modernisation – Migration from on-premises SQL Server to Microsoft Fabric was achieved through solution adaptation, not a full rebuild.

  • Future-proof architecture – Running on Microsoft Fabric with Power BI Premium, SPS Corporation's data platform is positioned to evolve with Microsoft's roadmap.

  • AI-ready data – With Timextender MCP Server, SPS Corporation is now positioned for governed adoption of non-hallucinating AI analytics.

"We're very excited about Timextender's new MCP Server and in particular about its ability to connect to our semantic models, where we can guide XPilot Analytics and Claude's interpretation of our data through additional natural language descriptions and explanations." – Chris Hutchinson, Senior D365FO Analyst
