Putting not-so-big data front and center in 2017

      Featured Image

For most, January is a month of reflection. A new year brings in new ideas and resolutions. A new year also calls for new goals and assessment of direction. This is true in business just as much as it is in personal life.

      data-within-reach.jpgThe Year of Data

For companies and organizations of all size, 2017 should be the Year of Data. Data must be moved into the front and center. This is true not because of the hype and all the endless possibilities data offers but instead because capitalizing on existing corporate data is the easiest thing to do with the largest impact. The gem is within reach, but we need to be willing to stretch a bit to get it.

For many readers, this statement can fall into the realm of cliché. The constant invocation of Big Data has anesthetized most of us to the talk of data in general. In that way, Big Data as a concept has hurt Not-Quite-So-Big-But-Still-Super-Important data measures that organizations can adopt right now.

How to put data front and center in 2017: automation

Interestingly, a curious failure has occurred too often. In most organizations, business users lament the current data dispensation, suggesting that they get too little too late and with too much effort required. In most organizations, IT professionals lament the constantly changing data needs of the business user and, further, are so backlogged as to never feel they are on their feet. While these lamentations continue, we ignore the solution in plain sight: automation.

Five myths bout data warehouse automation debunked

What are the benefits of data automation?

      • Automation allows for data self-service for business users while respecting the importance of governance and security, which are the constant bugaboos for IT (and rightly so).
      • Automation allows organizations to avoid the need for rigid pre-definition of data.
      • Automation allows for business and IT to work as a singularity, not as disparate and antagonistic elements of the same organization.
      • Automation allows organizations in general and IT in particular to use precious saved time to innovate.

Adding automation to your data solution is how you can put your not-so-big corporate data front and center in 2017. Here’s to 2017, your Year of Data!
